Southern Blvd. in Boardman is citing a critical operational crisis that has forced the organization to immediately suspend animal control services in Mahoning County.
For years, Animal Charity has provided these services without financial compensation. However, rising veterinary, staffing, housing, and operational costs have made it impossible to continue absorbing those expenses while maintaining care for the animals currently in the shelter.
Between January 1 and June 1 alone, Animal Charity took in 254 animals through Animal Control-related cases at a cost exceeding $156,000, all funded through donations, grants and fundraising efforts.
The decision to halt services impacts a wide range of situations including owner hospitalization, owner death, red-tagged evictions, seniors entering assisted living facilities, search warrants, hoarding interventions, and other emergency circumstances.
“We are asking the community for urgent support through donations, fostering, adopting, volunteering, and rescue partnerships as we work to stabilize operation and continue our humane mission,” Jen Falvey, board president and executive director of Animal Charity said.
“The decision to suspend animal control services was not made lightly. We are doing everything we can to ensure the animals already in our care receive the care, space, and attention they deserve, but we urgently need help,” Theresa Laverock, social media coordinator for Animal Charity said.
She added “These reductions are necessary to ensure we can continue caring for the animals currently housed at our shelter while we work to stabilize our financial situation and in hopes to continue our humane work.”
With no local, state or federal funding, Animal Chairty operates solely on donations, fundraisers and grants.
“We are grateful for the incredible compassion and support of our community. With community support and donations, we can navigate this crisis and continue our mission of protecting and caring for animals in need,” Laverock said. |
