A melee erupted last week in an administrative office at Center Intermediate School, 7410 Market St., that included a fourth grade student punching a “behavior support room teacher,” knocking her glass off her face.
About 12:30 p.m. on Tues., Oct. 28 two fourth grade students were in the office of Center’s Assistant Principal Nicholas Hewko who serves the school as the student discipline principal.
The two students had been involved in an “argument and shoving match” in a hallway after lunch. Also present in the office were a fourth grade counselor, Mindy DePietro; a behavior support room teacher, Jennifer Wise; as well as a health and well-being counselor, Shana Ross.
While being interviewed in Hewko’s office, one of the students became angry, stating ‘he didn’t do any of that’ and then told the fourth grade counselor, Ms. Wise, “Shut the f--- up,” after which the lad began to assault the other, fellow student involved in the hallway incident.
As the assault began, Wise attempted to intervene and the upset student “began striking her in the face numerous times, knocking her glasses off,” Boardman police were told. The student didn’t stop his actions there, as he began throwing various items around Hewko’s office, including the assistant principal’s laptop computer.
The fourth grade counselor then removed the student from Hewko’s office.
Following the incident, Wise, 26, who was hired by the Boardman Local School Board in July “complained of pain in and around her left eye and in her nose,” and said the student who had been removed from Hewko’s office had assaulted her four times during the first nine weeks of school. A request for Juvenile Court intervention has been made. |
