Maddy Slevin scored a game-high 14 points, Jocelynn Torres added 11 and the Boardman Spartan girls’ basketball team ended their 13-game losing streak with a 42-20 victory over the Hubbard Eagles (10-10) last Saturday at the Spartan Gymnasium.
Earlier in the week, Boardman (3-17, 0-7) suffered a 31-25 road setback at the hands of All-American Conference foe Warren Harding (12-6, 4-3: AAC).
Against the Eagles, everything clicked from the start for head coach Annie Pavlansky’s “five” as they opened a 21-13 halftime advantage, then utilized a stingy defense that held the Eagles to just seven, second-half points, outscoring their visitors by a 21-7 count for their first victory since defeating Cardinal Mooney, 49-40 back on December 10.
In addition to Slevin and Torres, Myah Soares contributed nine points with Lili Ison (six) and Aseel Mousa (two) also adding to their offensive effort.
Both teams grabbed 20 rebounds with the Spartans committing 15 turnovers and the Eagles 13 miscues.
With the loss, HHS lost their second consecutive outing and fell to 3-7 in 10 road contests.
The Spartans started their week with a 31-25 setback suffered at the hands of the Warren Harding Raiders.
It was their fifth loss by just single digits this year.
Akeelha Barnes and Cayden Reed each scored nine points to lead WGHHS while Torres chipped in with nine markers to lead the Spartans.
Boardman built a 7-5 lead after the first eight minutes of action and increased their advantage to 13-12 at the intermission.
BHS still led 19-18 after three frames but Barnes scored five of her points in the final period to help the Raiders outscore the Spartans, 13-6 over the final eight minutes as they sealed their third consecutive victory.
Harding also moved to 5-2 at home on the campaign.
Torres poured in nine points with Ison (seven points), Slevin (seven) and Emma Terlesky (two) also contributing to the Spartans’ offensive attack.
No team featured a double-digit scorer.
Boardman closes out regular season play this week when they entertain All-American Conference foe Howland (4-15, 3-4) at press time, looking for a split of their season series with the Tigers. Howland defeated the Spartans, 51-38, back on January 21.
