Evan Kuhn threw for 241 yards and five touchdowns while Erie (Pa.) McDowell opened a 28-7 halftime advantage and never looked back as the Trojans topped the Spartans, 48-21 last Friday at Spartan Stadium.
The win was the fourth in a row for McDowell (4-1) after suffering a 31-30 season opening loss on the road to the Mentor Cardinals.
The Spartans’ (0-6) losing streak was extended to six games while the 21 points scored by BHS was the most in a single game this season.
“Our record doesn’t tell the whole story because I do see improvement,” Spartan head coach D.J. Dota said after the game. “We will be back at it again Saturday morning as we prepare for Warren Harding on Friday night.”
Kuhn was 17 of 21 through the air with four of his touchdown tosses – he also suffered an interception – and his first 169 yards coming in the first 24 minutes of action.
Kuhn directed the Trojans to a score on their opening possession, capping a five-play, 55 yard drive in just 1:44 when he found Chase Carrick from 24 yards out for the first score of the game.
After Joseph Clark’s placement, the Trojans led 7-0.
The Spartans’ opening drive stalled after seven plays and on EMHS’s second possession of the game, Kuhn directed a seven-play, 65 yard drive that culminated in a five-yard scoring pass (3:29) to Cash Hammond for a 14-0 lead heading to the second period of play.
Not to be outdone, Boardman signal-caller Logan Miller engineered an 18 play, 80-yard drive that produced a seven-yard scoring strike to Kelly Pavlik at 6:25 of the second frame, cutting the deficit in half at 14-7.
It didn’t take Kuhn long to answer Boardman’s tally, leading the Trojans to two scores – the first touchdown came on a 23-yard pass to James Feronti at the 4:44 mark and the other a 20 yard scoring strike to Hammond at 3:04, his second touchdown catch of the game – in a span of a minute and 40 seconds for a 28-7 lead heading to the locker room at the half.
Boardman’s first drive of the second half ended in a three-and-out and with 6:27 remaining in the third period, the Trojans extended their lead to 35-7 after Emory Moffett hit paydirt from a yard away and Clark added the placement.
McDowell’s Ju’el Heidelberg then caught an 18-yard pass from Kuhn for the next score, Clark added the extra point try and the Trojans opened a 42-7 lead with 12 minutes remaining.
Miller then hooked up with Pavlik for the second time at 8:41 of the fourth period, this time from 23 yards out – Oswaldo Salinas added the extra point – to cut the McDowell lead to 42-14.
After the BHS defense held the Trojans to a three-and-out on their ensuing drive, Massimo Patrone’s 49 yard touchdown scamper made it a 42-21 game in favor of the Trojans with 3:41 remaining.
McDowell finished the scoring on the night when Marquis Knight scored on a two-yard run with 1:40 left in the contest.
Torin Snippert missed the extra point to keep it a 48-21 game in favor of the Trojans, the score the final points for either team on the night.
Miller finished 10 of 14 for 109 yards and two scores for Boardman with Pavlik leading the Spartans’ receiving corps with two touchdown catches totaling 30 yards.
Kick-off for Friday night’s game with the Raiders is set for 7 p.m.
